SPAN 345: Bilingualism in Spanish World
This semester was wonderful, I had an excellent teacher for this bilingualism course, and I learned many issues about bilingualism in the United States and the Spanish-speaking world. Having had Dr. Oliva, a highly qualified professor teaching this class, helped me to understand the general concepts of this course. The objectives of this subject were to explore the nature of bilingualism from the Linguistic, Neurologist and psycholinguistic point of view. After a hard work during the whole semester, I can proudly state that I was able to achieve and improve my knowledge in bilingualism.
In the linguistic field, I learned some grammatical rules that regulate most of the languages in the world, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. This knowledge helped me improve my listening, reading and writing skills in the Spanish language, which is essential in my Spanish career.
In the area of neurolinguistics, I learned that there are some problems called aphasias that can affect our ability to speak; I also learned that there are scientific researches that help us solve these speech problems. In the psycholinguistic field, I was able to understand the difference and rhythm of children’s learning compared with adults; this knowledge will help me in the future in my professional career. In addition, I could understand that the cognitive capacity of the human being varies according to age and educational background.
In conclusion, the study of the different areas of bilingualism, helped me to understand that bilingual people have a superior cognitive functioning that helps them to obtain better opportunities in the labor field, compared with the monolingual people.
