SPAN 306: History and culture of Latin America
The study of history illustrates us about situations and facts that happened in the past and that are somehow connected to the present; At the same time it shows us a perspective of the future of our society. In other words, the knowledge of history, specifically the history of Latin America, which is the focus of this course, allows us to know the past to understand the origin and causes of the political, social and economic problems that countries face Latin American in the 21ST century. In this way, to become aware of our origins, our cultural roots, how we have evolved as a society, and how we can contribute to the preservation of our Hispanic heritage and build a solid union among the Latin American peoples.
Within the multiple objectives of this course, such as knowing the characteristics of Latin American cultures and civilizations, understanding their historical and cultural development, and above all understanding the impact of European, African and Amerindian in the pre-Columbian villages that persist in our days; In my opinion, I think that a very high percentage of these goals was fulfilled. Thanks to the classes taught by Dr. Rafael Gómez, professor in charge of the instruction of this course, we could understand many historical and contemporary events of our Latin culture. The literary articles we read in classes; such Was Columbus a genocidal? The fall of the Aztecs, and the documentary Harvest of Empire helped me to fulfill understand the Latin American History and Culture.
