Course Reflective Narrative
LING 392: Nature of Language & Language Acquisition
The study of this course was very challenging for me, it was one of the most difficult classes I have taken as a student. Thanks to Dr. Paoze Thao, my professor in this class, I was able to successfully complete the course. The subject consisted of the introduction of the scientific study of language and the acquisition of language. Some basic concepts of linguistics such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, helped me understand the structure of the English language. In addition to these skills, in the psycholinguistic field, I learned the way children learn a language and the difficulties that some of them may have in the learning process. All these acquired knowledge will be useful in my career as a teacher in the field of education since in real life, I will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge.
At the end of the semester, we were required to take a long final test, and we were also required to make an oral presentation in which I had the opportunity to analyze, in detail, how a person from my selection uses English in a conversation. This work helped me to demonstrate and apply the language skills that I learned during the semester.
In summary, the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained in this learning experience, satisfactorily accomplish the basic requirements of my Spanish career. Furthermore, they helped me expand my lexicon and understand the grammatical structure of English; a language different from my primary language which is Spanish. Not only that, in general, it helped me to improve my ability to read and write in the English language.
