To meet the requirements of Spanish Major, related to direct interaction with the community, I took SPAN 301S : Service Learning course.
The community service course, SPAN 301: Service Learning, has been very helpful in many aspects of my life: academically, I have learned many events related to the Latino community (thanks to the interesting lessons taught by Dr. Fernández, my Professor in this class), facts that have strengthened my previous knowledge about the histories and cultures of the Latin American communities. In the social aspect, I had the fortune to meet many fellow students, who with their knowledge and discussions, always objectively, made this class an unforgettable experience.
At the beginning of the semester, the objective of the course was explained to us in detail. Despite having understood that this class is intimately linked to the service and my commitment to the Latino community, I could not assimilate the direct connection or understand what my intervention and direct participation in this project would be like. Once we were presented with the different institutions available to perform our services, I was pleased that “Salinas Adult School”, was one of the options; I did not hesitate for a moment and immediately became interested in this institution. This institution, the Salinas Adult School, is fully committed to the teaching of English as a second language; here, I learned my first English lessons; therefore, I know the learning process very well which helped me to work with the students of this school.
Having received the necessary training and skills, I was ready to successfully participate actively in the learning process of these young students, who saw in me an inspiration and an impulse to continue with their studies. I must express my deep gratitude to CSUMB, and Dr. Fernández, professor of this class, for giving me the opportunity to serve in my community and return to the institution where I learned my first words of English. Special mention deserves my program supervisor, Professor Robert Paden, who kindly supported me to do my work, and I also must thank him for teaching me on how to manage study groups.
In general, it was an extraordinary experience and an important learning process that will help me in the future, in my professional career, and in my personal life. To conclude, the Learning and Service course fulfilled the requirements set at the beginning. In addition, in the professional field, the objectives of the course, were covered satisfactorily; with this reflection, I conclude my participation in this course of service learning.
